LinkedIn has over 950 million members and roughly 65 million companies. Recruiters run searches every day looking for candidates exactly like you — and most profiles are optimized so poorly they never appear. A fully optimized LinkedIn profile can generate 5–10x more recruiter contacts than an unoptimized one for the same qualifications.
Here's what to fix, section by section.
The Profile Photo: First Impressions in Milliseconds
Profiles with a professional photo receive 21x more views and 9x more connection requests. You don't need a photographer — but you do need: good lighting (face a window), a plain or blurred background, business-casual or professional attire, and a genuine, relaxed expression. No sunglasses. No group photos cropped awkwardly. No vacation photos.
The Headline: Your #1 Ranking Factor
Your headline is the most important field in your profile. It's what appears in search results, in recruiter searches, in connection requests, and in post engagement. Most people use their current job title. That's a missed opportunity.
LinkedIn's algorithm weights the headline heavily for search. The more relevant keywords you include, the more often you appear in recruiter searches for those terms.
Formula: [Target Role Title] | [2–3 Key Skills or Specializations] | [Differentiator or Value Statement]
- Bad: "Software Engineer at Acme Corp"
- Better: "Software Engineer | React, Node.js, AWS | Building scalable B2B SaaS products"
- Bad: "Marketing Manager"
- Better: "Growth Marketing Manager | Paid Acquisition & SEO | Scaled ARR from $2M to $12M"
You have 220 characters for your headline. Use them all. Include the most common title variations for your target role — "Product Manager | Product Lead | Head of Product" — since recruiters search different terms.
The About Section: Your Pitch, Not Your History
The About section is your biggest text field and your best opportunity to tell a coherent story. Most people either leave it blank or write a dry third-person bio. Neither works.
Structure your About section in four parts:
- 1Opening hook (1–2 sentences): What you do and for whom. Make it immediately clear what type of role you're best suited for.
- 2Core expertise (2–3 sentences): Your key skills and the types of problems you solve. Include your most important keywords here.
- 3Notable achievements (2–4 bullet points): Your 2–4 strongest, quantified career achievements. The numbers people remember.
- 4Call to action (1 sentence): What you're looking for or how to reach you. "Open to senior PM roles in B2B SaaS — reach me at name@email.com."
Experience Bullets: Achievements, Not Duties
The most common LinkedIn mistake: describing what you were responsible for instead of what you achieved. "Managed social media accounts" tells a recruiter nothing. "Grew Instagram following from 8,000 to 94,000 in 18 months, generating $340K in attributable revenue" tells them everything.
For each role, write 3–5 achievement bullets following the formula: [Action verb] + [what you did] + [measurable result].
Skills: Quantity and Endorsements
Add up to 50 skills — LinkedIn allows this and every skill is a searchable keyword. Prioritize the skills most relevant to your target roles. Ask former colleagues for endorsements on your top 3–5 skills — profiles with endorsements rank higher in recruiter searches.
The 3 Things Most Profiles Get Wrong
- 1No keywords in the headline — using only current job title misses the opportunity to appear in broader searches.
- 2About section written in third person ("John is an experienced...") — this sounds stiff and impersonal. Write in first person.
- 3Experience bullets as job descriptions — copy-pasting from a job description into your LinkedIn does the opposite of what you want. Recruiters can't tell what you actually accomplished.
Open to Work: Use It Strategically
LinkedIn's "Open to Work" badge is visible to recruiters even if you hide it from your network (by selecting "Recruiters only"). If you're actively job searching, turn it on — it significantly increases recruiter InMail. If you're passively interested, use the "Recruiters only" setting to avoid signaling your employer.
