A generic cover letter is worse than no cover letter. It signals low effort and low interest — the two things that kill applications fastest. Tailoring a cover letter to each job description is the single highest-ROI activity in your job search. The question is how to do it efficiently.
Why Generic Letters Fail
Recruiters read hundreds of letters. Generic letters are immediately obvious — they could apply to any company or role. They don't demonstrate that you understand the specific problems the company is trying to solve, and they don't show that you've thought about how your experience maps to their needs. Step 1: Analyze the Job Description (5 Minutes)

Step 2: Map Your Best Matches (5 Minutes)
For each of the 3–4 critical requirements you identified, find your strongest corresponding achievement. The best achievement for a cover letter is specific, quantified, and directly relevant.
If the job requires "experience scaling engineering teams," your best match is: "Grew the backend team from 4 to 14 engineers over 18 months while maintaining sprint velocity." If it requires "track record in enterprise sales," your match is: "Closed 3 enterprise accounts totaling $2.4M ARR in fiscal year 2024."
Don't have an exact match for every requirement? Use the closest transferable experience and bridge it explicitly: "While my background is in B2C, I've consistently managed enterprise relationships at the partnership level — including..."
Step 3: Mirror Their Language (2 Minutes)
Use the company's own vocabulary. If they call it "product-market fit," use that phrase — not "finding the right product for the market." If they describe their culture as "high-agency," use "high-agency" or "autonomous." If they say "operators" instead of "managers," say operators.
This isn't manipulation — it's communication. People respond to language they recognize. It also signals cultural fit without you having to explicitly claim it.
Step 4: Write the Opening Hook Last (5 Minutes)
Your opening paragraph should be written after you've figured out your key achievements and language mirrors. The hook needs to connect your positioning to their specific context — and you can't do that until you know both sides of the equation.
Opening formula: [Your positioning relative to this role] + [Specific company reference] + [Hook that creates curiosity or demonstrates research].
